By the late 18th century, two scientists articulated quite distinct
experimental programs for investigating the "Cycle of Life". Alexander von Humboldt developed a physiological view of the Earth--in his plant geography place matters. Antoine Lavoisier analyzed respiration chemically--in his "Carbon Cycle" matter matters.
