The
history of the “Cycle of Life” opens a new window
on the history of ecology. Previously told as the synthesis
of Humboldt’s plant geography and Darwin’s theory
of evolution by natural selection, this story ignores the influence
of Naturphilosophie, organic chemistry, and thermodynamics.
Both Darwins remain important though. Erasmus for his holistic
romantic botany, and Charles for his evolutionary theory. |
