Robert
P. McIntosh, The Background of Ecology:
Concept and Theory (Cambridge: Cambridge
University Press, 1985).
Unlike
Worster, McIntosh does recognize the importance
of thermodynamic sciences such as plant physiology
to the history of ecology. It is one thing to
mention them, however, and quite another to
show how they migrated from 18th century chemistry
into 20th century ecosystem ecology.
