Robert P. McIntosh, The Background of Ecology: Concept and Theory (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1985).

Unlike Worster, McIntosh does recognize the importance of thermodynamic sciences such as plant physiology to the history of ecology. It is one thing to mention them, however, and quite another to show how they migrated from 18th century chemistry into 20th century ecosystem ecology.
